Is insomnia getting you down? Are you dragging each day because you can’t get a good night sleep? Is it affecting your work and your family life?

If you’re like me, you either cannot get to sleep (laying there away for hours) or you get to sleep initially, but then wake up several times throughout the night. I personally went YEARS walking around like a zombie each day due to lack of sleep.

Then I found a way to deal with it. I now sleep 7-8 hours a night and wake up refreshed. Here’s what I learned about insomnia.

Many people cannot sleep because their brain cannot “turn off” enough to allow the body to drift into a restful slumber. So our brains race and race going through all our thoughts for the day, and then we get worked up and stressed about the fact we cannot sleep.

There is, however, a way to trick the brain into stopping it’s thought process. When I listen to audiobooks, my brain switches into a “listening” mode. All the chatter I have going on in my brain is turned off, and the audiobook lulls me to sleep. I find this does not work for me with music or meditation CDs, only with audio books. I prefer listening to Harry Potter audio books because the speaker, Jim Dale, has a wonderfully soft voice that lulls me right to sleep.

I now fall asleep within 5 minutes! (Not 5 hours). If I wake up during the night, I turn the audio book right back on, and I’m sleep again within five minutes.

Now, you’re going to say “my husband or my wife wouldn’t like all that noise!”. Well, I’ve got a solution for that too. I found a great pillow speaker and lays flat under your pillow and your iPod/MP3 player, CD player, etc. No kidding, your spouse or partner won’t hear a thing when you use this pillow speaker, but you’ll be able to hear the audiobook perfectly!

For a small investment, you should try this out. Give it a couple of weeks as it will take your body time to adjust. Find your favorite audio book by someone with a soothing voice, load it onto your iPod and plug it in each night. Within only a few nights, you might find that you’re falling asleep faster and staying asleep longer.
